TOKYO: Retail prices for a wide range of food and daily necessities in Japan rose by more than 10 pct in October from 2020 averages due to higher materials costs, a survey by research firm Intage Inc. showed Monday.
Canola oil prices climbed 84 pct. Prices for salad oil rose 38 pct, while those for mayonnaise went up 26 pct and those for margarine gained 17 pct.
Aluminum foil prices increased 36 pct and prices for laundry detergent advanced 12 pct.
The survey covered about 6,000 retail stores across the country.
“Prices are expected to continue rising as factors that lifted materials costs, such as the conflict in Ukraine and a weak yen, remain in place,” an Intage analyst said.
