Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman, along with the Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih, visited Jeddah Islamic Port today to assess the performance of the Japanese ship “Suiso Frontier”, the first liquefied hydrogen carrier in the world.
The ministers were accompanied by the assistant minister of transport and logistics services Ahmed bin Sufyan Al-Hassan and the consul general of Japan in Jeddah, Izuru Shimmura.
The ship is the first liquefied hydrogen carrier in the world; It was built and developed with the support of the Japanese government with the purpose of transporting large quantities of liquified hydrogen by sea.
The ship is 116 meters long and 19 meters wide. It is also equipped with a dual-tank that has a capacity of 1,250 cubic meters and maintains the hydrogen’s temperature at -253 degrees Celsius.
This move comes within the framework aimed at supporting the efforts exerted by the Kingdom in order to stimulate the green hydrogen economy and enhance its global pioneering position in the energy sector.
It also highlights the Saudi ports’ readiness in terms of receiving such ships, which establishes the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics hub and underlines the significant competitive capabilities of Jeddah Islamic Port, along with its role in supporting the logistics system.
The energy minister recently signed an agreement with the minister of transport and logistics services, Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, with the aim of intensifying the efforts exerted to lower carbon emissions in the railway sector as well as within the transport and logistics system, promoting the use of green hydrogen applications on transport routes and employing the latest technologies to build safe, sustainable and eco-friendly transport systems, in accordance with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy as well as those of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
