AL AIN: The United Arab Emirates University announced a new partnership with the Japan Foundation to host the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) at its campus beginning in December.
The agreement aims to strengthen academic and cultural ties between the UAE and Japan by making one of the world’s most widely recognized Japanese language exams accessible to students and professionals in the UAE and the wider region.
The JLPT, established in 1984, is a standardized test that assesses and certifies the Japanese language proficiency of non-native speakers. Administered in over 80 countries, the exam measures reading, listening, vocabulary, and grammar skills across five levels, ranging from N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced).

It is often a requirement for university admissions, scholarship applications, and job opportunities in Japan.
University officials said that offering the JLPT on campus will help meet the growing demand for Japanese language studies in the UAE, as interest in Japanese culture, business, and education continues to rise.
The move also reflects the broader efforts by both nations to deepen bilateral cooperation across education, technology, and cultural exchange.
The Japan Foundation welcomed the collaboration, noting that expanding JLPT testing centers helps foster greater global understanding of the Japanese language and culture.
