Mt. Fuji’s climbing season began on July 1, with its most popular trail, Yoshida Trail, open to visitors.

Yamanishi Prefecture said it will be accepting 4,000 hikers per day on the trail, which is the most used route to the summit of the 3,776-meter mountain.

According to Kyodo News, the trail is set to remain open until Sept. 10 and local authorities will charge a doubled fee of 4,000 yen ($28) to ease worries of overcrowding and environmental issues.

Visitors will not be allowed through unless they have an overnight reservation for a mountain hut. Those planning to use the Yoshida Trail also have to agree to terms set by the local government, including the use of warm clothing and appropriate footwear.

Other trails through Shizuoka Prefecture to Mt. Fuji will be open by July 10, with the prefecture charging a similar fee, but without a limit to the number of hikers.
