After many cruise ships across the world, particularly the Diamond Princess ship docked in Japan, had to be quarantined after the coronavirus outbreak, Japanese news outlet NHK conducted a black light experiment that shows just how easily germs and viruses spread.

The experiment simulates the atmosphere of a buffet restaurant or on a cruise shop, in which 10 people participated.

One of the participants was singled out as an “infected” person, with a fluorescent liquid applied into their hands. The substance is only visible under black light, representing the germs from a cough or sneeze.

The NHK experiment shows the 10 participants going about the restaurant for 30 minutes, filling up their plates as they normally would, unaware of the infected person.

Once the trial is done, the black light is turned on and the “germs” are illuminated on the participants’ food, plates, cutlery and even on some of their faces.

As of May 15, Japan has confirmed 16,120 COVID-19 infected cases, with 697 deaths and 9,868 recoveries.
