TOKYO: Two days before the opening ceremony for the Tokyo Olympics, the Japanese women’s softball team clinched an 8-1 victory over Australia in a five-innings game.

The softball tournament has two parts, the first part being at Azuma Stadium in Fukushima and the second part of the tournament in Yokohama Stadium.

Azuma Stadium has a capacity of 30,000 people and was built in 1986. It was renovated for the 2020 Olympic Games, but on Wednesday only hosted around 50 people.

The decision to ban spectators was taken on July 9 during a 5-party meeting bringing together members of the IOC, JOC and Tokyo Metropolitan Government as well as local authorities to ensure safety regarding due to COVID-19.
