TOKYO: Tokyo governor KOIKE Yuriko awarded 17 Olympians and 44 Paralympians medalists during a ceremony at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building on Tuesday, giving them medals of honor and a Tokyo Resident Sports Award.
Among gold medalists, Mayu Mukaida, a wrestler athlete, was the first athlete who received the award. Three other gold medalists were fencing athletes, and three others were judokas.
During the ceremony, the President of the Japan Olympic Committee, Hashimoto, expressed appreciation for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for supporting the games.
Takuji Ogata of the Japan Foundation and Akio Mimura, the Tokyo Chamber of Industry chairman, attended the ceremony. All expressed appreciation to the governor of Tokyo that the Olympic games went ahead despite the pandemic.
After the ceremony, the athletes were applauded by kids from Shinjuku schools. During Olympic Games and Paralympics, kids were not allowed to attend the games due to the corona pandemic, but at today’s ceremony, Kids exchanged with athletes who talked about their experience in the games.
