TOKYO: Aoyama Gakuin University took victory on Monday in the oldest inter-university race in the Tokyo area, a race that starts from Hakone in the hills west of Tokyo and ends in the Otemachi district near Tokyo Station.

The Hakone Ekiden relay race is run over two days and takes place in cool, winter weather. It is one of Japan’s most popular sports events and usually attracts large crowds of people.

This year, the winning team of this 98th edition covered the 109.6 kilometers in 10 hours 43 minutes and 42 seconds.

Harunobu Nakakura of the Aoyama team edged out a runner from Juntendo University by 10 minutes to cross the finish line.

Every year since 1920, 20 universities in the Tokyo region and one other university in Japan have competed in this marathon, which features teams of runners who take turns to run the five stages of the race.

Last year, Komazawa University won ahead of Soka University, while Aoyama finished in fourth place.
