Sweden’s Marcus Ericsson prevailed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to dramatically win Honda it’s fifteenth Indy 500, living up to his billing as the “Sneaky Swede.”
Ericsson took control of the famous race late and had it under control for Chip Ganassi Racing until a crash by teammate Jimmie Johnson with 10 laps remaining brought out a late red-flag stoppage, allowing the field to catch up and challenging his a two-lap shootout.
“I needed all that Honda power to be able to pull it off! So we’re very, very thankful for that. It’s just an incredible feeling. We’ve been strong all month, both our Ganassi cars and all the Honda cars. We’ve been the ones to beat, to be honest. To end up in Victory Lane, it’s just a dream come true,” Ericsson, said.
The spotlight was not an unfamiliar place to the Honda-powered Chip Ganassi Racing organization, whose team dominated the day by leading a combined 163 of 200 laps, with Scott
Dixon leading the pack with 95 laps led and becoming the all-time lap leader in the Indy 500.
Dixon fell victim to a late-race pit lane speeding violation allowing 2021 Champion Alex Palou to finish ninth place while he finished twenty-first.
2013 Indy 500 winner Tony Kanaan finished third on the day. While 2016 Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi stormed to fifth place, four-time ‘500’ champ Helio Castroneves moved from 27th to seventh and 2019 race winner Simon Pagenaud finished eighth.
