Newly appointed Japan Ambassador to Iraq introduces himself in Iraqi dialect

DUBAI: Japan’s new Ambassador to Iraq MATSUMOTO Futoshi makes waves on social media with a new video of him speaking Arabic with a traditional Iraqi accent.

Matsumoto posted an introductory video of himself on Monday where he described Iraq as a country with “rich history and heritage” and that he was happy to be there.

He also explained on Twitter that his first Arabic language teacher was a Iraqi poet, named Abu Furat.

The ambassador’s new post in Baghdad is something he had always wanted, according to his video, and he added that he had many Iraqi friends.

In his tweet he said: “Hello! How are you? I am the new Japanese ambassador to Iraq. In my first two days in Baghdad, I went to Al-Mutanabbi Street and had a drink with my Iraqi friends at Shabandar Café. I would like to introduce myself to you in this video.”

Many took to social media to express their appreciation and support for the new ambassador and his mission.

One Iraqi journalist, Ali Lami, replied to Matsumoto saying: “Good luck on your new mission, Ambassador. Your mastery of the Arabic language and the Iraqi dialect is appreciated.”

Another Iraqi Twitter user replied to the ambassador offering his help and support, saying: “Welcome to the country of history and civilization, Iraq. God willing, we will improve your language and Arabic dialect during your stay here. If you need anything, me and my Iraqi brothers are at your service.”

Another Saudi social media user, Mohanna AlGhamdi, said: “Japan’s ambassadors are always amazing… They are always immersed in the culture of the people of the country they come to.”

Previously, IWAI Fumio was Japan’s Ambassador to Iraq and was quite popular for his participation in activities with local people and adopting their lifestyle. He now serves as an ambassador to Saudi Arabia
