TOKYO: The takeover of Newcastle United by the Saudi Private Investment Fund caused a lot of debate in England about who should be allowed to own Premier League clubs, but England’s Tammy Abraham says players don’t get involved with ownership disputes.

The A.S. Roma striker, who played for Chelsea under sanctioned Russian owner – now former owner – Roman Abramovich stated: “As players, we just try to focus on what we do on the pitch. Whatever happens higher up happens and that’s between the club and the ownerships, so for us we just focus on the football.”

Abraham narrowly missed out on joining England at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and says he understands how some of the players feel about the controversial issues there but says that cultural norms need to be respected. At the same time, he added, people should be allowed to express their opinions freely.

With Italy failing to qualify for the Qatar World Cup, Roma are currently in Japan for an exhibition tournament and Abraham, young midfielder Cristian Volpato and General Manager Thiago Pinto held a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan.
