The Government of Japan extended an Emergency Grant Aid of 146 million yen (USD 1 million) to the Jenin refugee camp in Palestine, which suffered severe damages from the Israeli military operation.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan will, through the aid, implement humanitarian assistance in areas such as sanitation, health and response to unexploded ordnance through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs YAMADA Kenji visited the UNRWA Health Center in the West Bank on Monday. He was accompanied by Yoichi Nakashima, Japanese Ambassador to Palestine.

This year also marks 70 years of partnership with Japan and UNRWA.

During his visit to Palestine, Yamada met with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh in Ramallah. They discussed the political file, the Israeli occupation’s violations, in addition to promoting bilateral relations between the two countries.

According to the Palestinian news and information agency, Shtayyeh thanked Japan for its firm stance against settlement activities and its support of the Palestinian people’s rights.

The Palestinian Prime Minister also praised Japan’s sustained support for UNRWA. He called on Japan to fully recognize the state of Palestine in order to protect the two-state solution.

According to Japan’s MOFA, the Asian country will continue its efforts towards confidence-building between the parties concerned to achieve a two-state solution regarding the Middle East Peace Process, while urging all parties to exercise the utmost restraint and refrain from violence and provocative behavior.
