Bolivia's health ministry said Tuesday that it has quarantined three Japanese tourists for screening in an effort to prevent the spread of the China-originated novel coronavirus.

The trio were taken to a hospital on Tuesday after developing fever and other symptoms of colds during their stays at a hotel near Uyuni lake in Potosi, according to the governor of the southwestern Bolivian prefecture.

The ministry said that their symptoms differed from those of patients infected with the coronavirus.

Local media reported that the three Japanese travelers are men in their early 20s.
