TOKYO: Member of the House of the Councilors SUZUKI Muneo has strongly criticized Thursday’s speech by US President Joe Biden in which he likened Palestinian organization Hamas to Russian President Vladimir Putin and considered they both share a common goal of destroying neighboring democratic countries.

Suzuki, who has close ties to Russia, suggested that Biden’s equating of Hamas with Russia is a result of the US president’s old age. Biden is 80 years old, five years older than Suzuki.

Suzuki also noted that it has been approximately 20 months since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while the current conflict between Hamas and the Israeli military has only been ongoing for two weeks.

Suzuki stressed the importance of dialogue to help resolve both the Ukraine and Gaza issues and criticized the United States for its involvement in various international conflicts, saying that such actions were clear violations of international law. 

Suzuki further argued that maintaining a mindset that whatever actions the US takes are always right and adopting a top-down approach to judgment is undemocratic.
