TOKYO: A strong earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale shook Tokyo and the surrounding areas on Thursday morning.

The earthquake had a seismic intensity of 5- on the Japanese scale (5 on a scale of 10) and was centered in the western part of Ibaraki Prefecture to the northeast of Tokyo.

The maximum shaking was felt in Tochigi Prefecture and Saitama Prefecture to the north of Tokyo.

Tokyo and the surrounding areas have been hit by a series of earthquakes in recent weeks, including two in Chiba Prefecture – east of Tokyo – that registered more than 5 on the Richter Scale.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that more strong earthquakes are likely to occur.
