TOKYO: The Japanese government said Friday it will spend an additional 2.5 billion yen for the renovation of Biosafety Level (BSL) 3 facilities, a clinical study on Avigan, an anti-influenza drug, and other measures against the COVID-19 coronavirus.
The amount will add to spending of 2 billion yen already decided by the government to fund such plans.
The government plans to renovate some existing BSL-3 facilities, which are allowed to study high-risk pathogens.
It also hopes to confirm the effectiveness of Avigan against the new coronavirus.
"We want to work with full efforts on research and development to settle the situation as soon as possible," science and technology policy minister Naokazu Takemoto told a press conference.
