TOKYO: A small Japanese leftist group took to the streets of Tokyo on Wednesday to denounce Israel’s war on Gaza and the Japan-United States summit currently being held in Washington.

“Today, we are demonstrating and marching toward the Prime Minister’s Office and the US Embassy with the aim of demanding an end to the Japan-US summit, which is a meeting for making war plans,” the lead demonstrator shouted through a loudspeaker from a small van leading the protesters through central Tokyo.

“Prime Minister KISHIDA [Fumio] is visiting the US to hold talks with American President Joe Biden. This is a war summit that needs to be crushed,” she said.

A large police presence marshaled the demonstrators as they walked along the streets of Tokyo.

They denounced “the war launched by the Zionists, who are slaughtering the Palestinians.” They shouted slogans calling for the “crushing of those launching the war” and they expressed their solidarity with the Palestinians, calling for the liberation of Palestine.

Demonstrators raised their fists in unison and called on Israel “to get out of Gaza immediately.”

They also carried flags and placards seeking “The Liberation of the Okinawan People” from the American military bases in Japan.
