TOKYO: Japan and Germany will establish a framework for dialogue about economic security, Japanese government sources said Monday.
The framework will be agreed on at a meeting between Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during Kishida’s visit to Germany from Friday.
From Japan, officials of the Foreign Ministry and the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry will attend the dialogue. Topics will include strengthening supply chains for semiconductors and critical mineral resources, and cooperation in the field of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
The two members of the Group of Seven major powers will build the framework amid China’s increasing economic coercion. The two sides agreed to cooperate on economic security when Scholz and other German cabinet members visited Japan in March 2023.
Before his trip to Germany, Kishida and the leaders of South Korea, Australia and New Zealand will hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington. The four countries will tell Zelenskyy that they will work together to support Ukraine.
