Magnitude 7.0 earthquake hits Russian Far East, No impact on Japan

TOKYO:  The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami forecast for the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Okinawa Prefecture following the earthquake that struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East on the morning of the 18th. “Although some sea level fluctuations are expected, there is no need to worry about damage,” the agency said.

The earthquake occurred at 7:10a.m. local time on the 18th (4:10 a.m. Japan time) near the Kamchatka Peninsula. Its magnitude is estimated to be 7.4 on the Richter scale.  

The epicenter was 102 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the peninsula’s capital, and about 29 km deep.
