TOKYO: Following the murder of a 10-year-old Japanese boy in Shenzhen on September 18, Japan on Tuesday warned its citizens staying in or traveling to China to be extremely careful of their surroundings and other people.
A Foreign Ministry advisory said Japanese citizens should be alert to the approach of suspicious people and be especially careful when traveling with children.
On September 18, a student from the Japanese School in Shenzhen was stabbed by a man while walking to school. He died the following day.
A suspect has been detained by the authorities, but they have released no details of the incident or the attacker despite requests from the Japanese government.
The incident was not an isolated one. In June, a Japanese parent and child were stabbed in Suzhou, and there have been a series of incidents in which Japanese people have been victimized.
Other stabbing incidents have also occurred throughout China.
The Foreign Ministry alerted citizens to its “Safety Guide” to help people protect themselves.
It also provided contact information for Japanese citizens, including the Counter-Terrorism Office for Japanese Nationals.
