DUBAI: The Japanese defense ministry said on Friday that two Air Self-Defense Force airplanes arrived in Jordan for the possible evacuation of Japanese nationals from Lebanon.

According to Kyodo News, the C-2 airplanes landed in Jordan after departing from Japan’s prefecture of Tottori on Thursday, while another aircraft is set to fly to Greece as part of the evacuation efforts.

Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said that Japan’s priority is the “safety of our nationals abroad.”

Two Japanese nationals have fled Lebanon and arrived in Cyprus on a ship chartered by the Japanese government, the government said Thursday.

Some 50 Japanese nationals are currently in Lebanon, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

On Thursday, Japanese Foreign Minister IWAYA Takeshi also asked his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, by phone on Thursday to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals in Jordan.

Israel and Hezbollah have traded fire across the Lebanon border almost daily since the day after Hamas’ cross-border attack on Oct. 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 Israelis and took 250 others hostage. Israel declared war on the militant group in the Gaza Strip in response.

More than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in the territory, and just over half the dead have been women and children, according to local health officials.

Nearly 2,000 people have been killed in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
