TOKYO: Japan’s Foreign Minister and his Iranian counterpart Dr. Seyyed Abbas Araghichi had a telephone talk on Monday in which they discussed the Middle East situation and Iran’s “nuclear file,” which refers to Iran’s nuclear program and the international agreements and disputes surrounding it.

According to the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo, Minister Iwaya expressed Japan’s serious concern about the current increase of tensions in the Middle East, including the recent attack by Iran against Israel, and stated that Japan strongly urges all parties concerned, including Iran, to exercise restraint to avoid further escalation in the region. Minister Iwaya also requested Iran’s support in securing the safety of Japanese nationals in case the situation deteriorates.

The Foreign Ministry said Araghchi explained Iran’s position and efforts and assured cooperation on the protection of Japanese nationals.

The two ministers also exchanged views on Iran’s nuclear program. Minister Iwaya stated that Iran must cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the multilayered dialogue between Japan and Iran, including at the foreign ministerial level, for the promotion of peace and stability in the Middle East region and the international community.
