SENDAI (Miyagi Pref.): Tohoku Electric Power Co. said Sunday it will halt the operations of the No. 2 reactor at its Onagawa nuclear power plant in Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, due to a problem with instrument delivery that occurred during power generation preparation work.

No radioactive material has leaked out, the company said.

On Sunday, the instrument, which assists the neutron detector, was electrically delivered into the reactor and stopped working during the recovery process, according to Tohoku Electric. It has already been recovered manually and the company is investigating the detailed cause.

The Onagawa No. 2 reactor was brought back online only on Tuesday for the first time in about 13 years. It is a boiling water reactor, the type of reactors at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.’s disaster-crippled Fukushima No. 1 plant, and was expected to start commercial operations on Dec. 25.
