TOKYO: Japan says it wants all parties in Syria “to play a constructive role in promoting a comprehensive political settlement and national reconciliation.”
Foreign Ministry Press Secretary KITAMURA Toshihiro issued a statement in which Japan calls on all the parties to achieve national reconciliation “through dialogue among the Syrian people” to bring about a peaceful and stable transition in the wake of the overthrow of President Bashaar Assad in December.
Kitamura stated that Japan is concerned about the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Syria that has resulted in many casualties among the civilian population.
Japan, he added, “strongly urges all parties concerned to immediately cease violence and comply with international law, including international humanitarian law.”
He said Japan has been closely monitoring the developments in Syria – including incidents of violence in the coastal areas – and has taken note of positive steps toward reconciliation among the various factions.
