TOKYO:  Some 4,000 Japanese nationals in around 50 countries are unable to return to Japan mainly due to border closure measures introduced amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Friday.

About 1,000 of them have not decided yet how to return home, he told the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Japanese parliament.

"We'll deal with this sufficiently and carefully, taking into consideration what means of return are best and what the nationals want," Motegi also said.
