TOKYO: A significant earthquake jolted Nagano Prefecture, registering a maximum seismic intensity of 5 at approximately 8:19pm on the 18th.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located in northern Nagano Prefecture at a depth of about 10 km. While the agency indicated that there was no need to be concerned about a tsunami resulting from this earthquake, it advised people to take precautions in case of strong tremors followed during the nighttime.

“As the night goes on, it is essential to prioritize your safety. Make sure you are ready to evacuate quickly by keeping important items close at hand, such as slippers or shoes for ease of movement, a flashlight, and an emergency evacuation bag near your pillow,” the Agency advised.

The last seismic intensity of 5-low observed in Nagano Prefecture occurred during the Noto Peninsula earthquake on New Year’s Day last year.

The prefectures surrounding Nagano recorded seismic intensity levels of five and below.

An eyewitness from Chikuhoku Village told NHK Broadcasting that he experienced significant horizontal shaking that felt like a large explosion coming from beneath for several seconds. However, nothing fell off the shelves, and no glass broke. Additionally, water and electricity remained available in the village hall.
