TOKYO: Hiroshima Governor YUZAKI Hidehiko and Hiroshima City Mayor MATSUI Kazumi have requested the Ministry of Defense and others not to conduct landing training for American aircraft carriers at Iwakuni Air Base, Hiroshima Home Television reported.

The US military has stated that if landing training for aircraft carriers cannot be conducted at Iwo Jima due to weather conditions or other reasons, it will be conducted at Iwakuni Air Base or other locations.

Governor Yuzaki has sent a request letter to the US and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stating that it is unacceptable due to the increased noise pollution and risk of accidents in the surrounding areas.

Hiroshima Mayor Matsui has also sent a request letter, stating that it is “absolutely unacceptable.”

Iwakuni Air Base is in neighboring Yamaguchi Prefecture, about 35 kilometers from Hiroshima City.
