TOKYO: Chief Cabinet Secretary HAYASHI Yoshimasa said Japan protested the Israeli government following the firing of warning shots by occupation forces at delegation of diplomats, including Japanese nationals.

The delegation was visiting the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank on May 21. The camp is a significant location due to its history of conflict and the presence of a large Palestinian population.

“In response to this alarming situation, our government has taken immediate action by lodging an official protest with Israeli authorities against this very regrettable firing,” Hayashi said.

“We are seeking clarification regarding what occurred and urging them to implement measures that would prevent such incidents from happening again,” he said at a press conference on Thursday.

Hayashi added that the Israeli government confirmed that it “fully understands” this request, expressing its regret. It also stated that it would investigate the facts and report the findings to Japan.

No one, including the Japanese, was injured, Hayashi said.

Palestinian news agency Wafa reported the delegation included diplomats from more than 20 countries including Britain, China, Egypt, France, Japan, Jordan, Turkey and Russia.
