The Japanese government welcomed on Friday the formation of the new cabinet in Iraq headed by Prime Minister Al-Kadhimi that was approved by the Iraqi Council of Representatives

A statement issued by the foreign ministry in Tokyo said Japan "appreciates the efforts by the various political parties in Iraq and hopes that the vacant ministerial positions will be filled as soon as possible."

The Government of Japan also expects that the new cabinet will promptly and appropriately address various issues, including the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), in a manner that will broadly gain trust from the Iraqi people, the statement said.

Japan will cooperate with the new cabinet with a view to further enhancing bilateral relations and tackling the various challenges in the Middle East, said the foreign ministry
