Japan’s annual Tokyo Game Show is the most recent event to face the consequences of the global spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The Tokyo Game Show event, similar to world events like E3 and Comic Con, has been canceled to protect the health and safety of its visitors, exhibitors and stakeholders.

The video game-based convention would have been held at the Makuhari Messe, which would make it difficult for visitors to practice social distancing and getting to the location also required taking crowded trains.

Organizers of the show stated Friday that the situation in Japan remained “unpredictable,” and that they had decided to cancel the event after a “long consideration.”

They also said that the Tokyo Game Show may be replaced with a digital or virtual showcase, as it is unknown whether the show will still take place from September 24 till September 27.
