
TOKYO: The cumulative number of patients of the disease caused by the new coronavirus in Japan stood at 17,333 as of 10 a.m. Monday (1 a.m. GMT), up by 273 from a week earlier.
The figure includes 16,284 patients who got infected in Japan, 712 people who were aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined off Yokohama, south of Tokyo, earlier this year over the virus, 149 crew members of the Costa Atlantica cruise ship, where a group infection occurred while being docked in Nagasaki, southwestern Japan, and 15 people who returned to Japan aboard government-chartered flights.
Tokyo was the prefecture with the highest cumulative number of COVID-19 patients at 5,152, followed by Osaka at 1,781, Kanagawa at 1,334 and Hokkaido at 1,054.
Meanwhile, the nationwide death toll from the virus rose by 84 to 853.
