The Tokyo metropolitan government on Tuesday revised its three-stage road map for reopening its economy after weeks of business closures due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The metropolitan government said it will lift its shutdown requests for gyms in the second phase and for karaoke boxes and bars in the third phase.

The original road map, released on Friday, did not mention gyms, karaoke boxes or other facilities with higher risk of infection.

When to lift closure requests for nightclubs, hostess clubs and live music bars remain to be decided.

The revision came after the central government on Monday lifted a coronavirus state of emergency for Tokyo and four other prefectures, the only areas where the measure had remained in place.

The revised road map allows events to take place with 100 or fewer people indoors or up to 200 people outdoors in the first and second phases.

The first phase started Tuesday, allowing libraries and museums to reopen. On Friday, the metropolitan government will assess the coronavirus situation to decide whether to enter the second phase.
