TOKYO: Japan's Defense Ministry said Friday it will provide extra bonuses to Self-Defense Forces members who have engaged in coronavirus outbreak-related operations with high risks of infection.
Some 4,000 SDF members will be given between some 50,000 yen to 150,000 yen on June 30. The bonuses will be paid from the fiscal 2020 budget.
The SDF was ordered on Jan. 31 to work on dealing with the epidemic.
Members of the SDF were sent to take part in operations to provide medical and livelihood support to passengers of the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which was quarantined off the coast of Japan, and to assist the return of Japanese people from abroad.
From March 28, SDF members engaged in quarantine and other work at Tokyo International Airport at Haneda and Narita International Airport in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.
