United States Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun will visit Japan for two days from July 9, according to Japanese Foreign Ministry officials.
Biegun is expected to hold discussions with Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Takeo Akiba and others on the situation in Hong Kong, the officials said.
The US Secretary of State, who is also President Donald Trump’s special representative for North Korea, is the first senior foreign government official to visit Japan since the introduction of entry restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19, caused by the novel coronavirus, according to the officials.
Biegun will be exempted from enduring a two-week self-quarantine in Japan, as he has agreed to undergo a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test upon both, his arrival and departure.
