TOKYO: Nearly 100 protesters in Japan demonstrated against the gentrification of public parks in support of homeless people outside the National Olympic Stadium on July 24, the day originally scheduled for the start of the Games.

In Japan, many homeless people live in parks in the capital. The largest is Meiji Park, situated a few hundred meters from an Olympic competition center.

The participants, including some homeless, unfurled banners which read “Olympic Kill the poor” during the demonstration.

Protest organizers are calling for the Olympics, which have currently been postponed until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic, to be stopped entirely and for the allocation of money to those in need.

A petition concerning the government bonus of 100,000 yen to each individual distributed due to the coronavirus crisis was also circulated during the demonstration. Because the homeless have no fixed address, many have not received the payment.

Protesters carried banners with slogans such as “We don’t want the Olympics anywhere in the world.” In addition to pro-homeless activists, they also included those against the hosting of the Games.
