TOKYO: The Japanese government said Monday that it will send an additional team of officials and experts to support efforts to tackle the oil spill from a stranded Japanese cargo ship off Mauritius.

The team, composed of officials from the Environment and Foreign ministries and ecosystem and other experts, will leave Japan on Wednesday for Mauritius, an island country in the Indian Ocean.

The second international emergency relief team from Japan will assist in work to remove the spilled oil from coastal areas off Mauritius and assess the environmental impacts.

The first team is already engaged in activities to collect the spilled oil and prevent it from spreading.
