TOKYO: Japan will surely offer medium- to long-term support to tackle the oil spill from a Japanese cargo ship grounded off Mauritius, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Wednesday.
“In order to restore the environment and revive the country, a wide variety of efforts need to be made, not only for preventing the oil from spreading further and removing the oil from the area, but also for helping economic and social sectors,” the top Japanese government spokesman told a press conference.
The Japanese ship spilled massive amounts of fuel oil into the ocean after running aground off the coast of the Indian Ocean island country in July. The freighter, owned by Nagashiki Shipping Co., based in Kasaoka, Okayama Prefecture, western Japan, was chartered by Japanese shipping firm Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd.
