TOKYO: The Japanese government has lodged a strong protest with China over an incident Sunday in which two Chinese coast guard ships tried to come close to a Japanese fishing boat in Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.
“We’ve made a strong protest to China through diplomatic channels both in Tokyo and Beijing,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato told a press conference on Monday.
Tokyo strongly demanded that the two Haijing ships immediately stop chasing the Japanese ship and leave the Japanese waters soon, the top Japanese government spokesman said.
“We want to continue responding calmly and resolutely to China,” Kato said. “We’ll fully enhance vigilance and surveillance in the waters around the Senkaku Islands,” he added.
Beijing claims the Japanese-administered islands, known as Diaoyu in China.
