TOKYO: Shionogi & Co. said Friday it has abandoned a plan to start a clinical trial for a coronavirus treatment by the end of the fiscal year through March 2021.

The Japanese pharmaceutical company found it would take more time to evaluate the treatment’s effectiveness and safety.

In June, Shionogi President and CEO Isao Teshirogi said the company was expected to start the clinical trial as early as this calendar year.

Shionogi said it is expected to begin a clinical trial for a coronavirus vaccine by the end of this year as planned.
