TOKYO: Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Friday that he will visit African countries soon.
The government is arranging for him to visit Tunisia, Mozambique, South Africa and Mauritius between Tuesday and Dec. 14.
With his counterparts of the four countries, Motegi is expected to discuss economic cooperation in the post-coronavirus era and the Japan-proposed free and open Indo-Pacific initiative amid China’s growing maritime assertiveness.
This summer, oil leaked from a cargo ship chartered by Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. that went aground off Mauritius.
At a news conference Friday, Motegi said that in Mauritius, he hopes to explain progress in Japan’s short-term assistance and medium- to long-term cooperation and confirm coordination in various fields.
