Earthquake of magnitude 5.5 strikes Aomori in northeastern Japan

A strong earthquake rocked Aomori Prefecture, northeastern Japan on Saturday with an estimated magnitude of 5.5, measuring as high as lower 5, the fifth-highest level on the Japanese seismic intensity scale.

The earthquake occurred at around 4:19 p.m. (7:19 a.m. GMT) off the coast of neighboring Iwate Prefecture at a depth of about 50 kilometers, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The agency says that there is no tsunami threat.

There have been no reports of problems in nuclear facilities in Aomori from the quake, according to the secretariat of the Nuclear Regulation Authority.
