TOKYO: The foreign ministry in Tokyo confirmed Friday the appointment of Fumio Iwai, 60, as ambassador to Saudi Arabia, effective Dec. 4. He was Japan’s Ambassador to Iraq.

The appointment was made official by the Japanese government at a cabinet meeting.

Iwai entered the foreign ministry in 1984 after graduating from the faculty of law at Kyoto University in Japan. His previous posts included director-general of the Secretariat of the Cabinet Office’s International Peace Cooperation Headquarters. In September 2020, he became attached to the foreign minister’s secretariat.

Fumio Iwai was popular during his post in Iraq participating in activities with local people and adopting their life style. He is reportedly fluent in Arabic and fasted 3 days of the holy month of Ramadan during his service.
