TOKYO: Yuichiro Tamaki, a member of Japan’s House of Representatives, was re-elected as leader of Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) on Dec. 18, in the party leadership election in Tokyo.
Tamaki beat Takae Ito, who also ran for the election.
“It was a great election campaign, and Ms. Ito was an excellent opposing candidate,” Tamaki said in his first remarks after the win.
Tamaki, one of the young promising politicians in Japan, pledged to continue pushing for moderate reform direction for the future and to cooperate with party members to create new Japan, overcoming the current pandemic.
His new term will be until September 2023.
The DPFP has 10 seats in the House of Representatives. In the House of Councilors, the party and a group of parliantarians have 15 seats.
