TOKYO: An earthquake at the scale of 4 on the Japanese scale of Shindo hit the remote island of Toshima south of Tokyo at around 1:53 am on Friday, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said noting that there is no tsunami caused by this earthquake.
The seismic intensity scale was between 3 and 1 Shindo in the prefectures facing the islands near Toshima, with about 1 Shindo going unnoticed in Tokyo where many people were outside in popular spots observing the first moments of the New Year of 2021.
No damage was reported as a result of this trembler that has the epicenter at the depth of 10km under water in the Pacific Ocean.
Small earthquakes were registered in northern part of the Izu Islands, with a seismic intensity of less than 5 in Toshima on the 18th of last month, local media reported.
Japan’s seismic scale, Shindo, measures the degree of shaking through set of numbers — ranging from 0 to 7. It is different from an earthquake’s magnitude, which is a numerical value reflecting the size or energy of the earthquake at its source.
