The Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics debate has been ongoing since it was announced that the sporting event would be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic last year.
Uncertainty surrounding the Games has been causing a stir with officials and the Japanese public alike.
Arab News Japan took to the streets of Tokyo to ask what residents and citizens in the capital thought about the situation.
The reactions were mixed, with some people saying the Games should go ahead. One Japanese explained that he supports the event because tourists and consumers will visit Japan, which will be “good for the economy.”
Others, however, were opposed to the idea of the event going ahead, explaining that the COVID-19 situation was still too dire.
One man said he did not see the Tokyo Olympics going ahead “in a way that is safe.”
A survey recently published by the Japan Press Research Institute showed that 37.9 percent of respondents said the Tokyo Games should be canceled while 34 percent said the events should be postponed again.
