SHIZUOKA: A paper package designed to export high-class melons to Dubai and Qatar in a “gift box suitable to be presented to a royal Arab family” has received an award in the Japan Package Contest 2020, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported.
The special package was jointly developed in the town of Fukuroi by Shizuoka Prefecture Greenhouse Agricultural Cooperative’s Crown Melon Branch and others.
The package is a black box with a gold pattern on the surface and a gold check pattern inside. The melon is placed on a dark red cloth.
A person in charge of the design at the company that made it was reported as saying: “I tried to make the box look luxurious when opened. I want people to get a sense of Japan from the ichimatsu checkered pattern.”
It is said that melons in this kind of packaging are sold at about three times the price of those in Japan.
