TOKYO: Japan decided to provide 634 million yen (about US$6 million) grant aid to Syria through WHO to strengthen health and medical services in the northeast part of the country, the foreign ministry in Tokyo on Feb. 15 said.

Notes of this assistance were exchanged on Feb. 12 in Geneva, Switzerland, between Kazuyuki Yamazaki, Ambassador of Japan’s permanent mission to Geneva, and Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesos, the WHO Director General, according to the ministry.

“Although fighting has declined in many Syrian regions, this aid is aimed at alleviating difficulties facing over 11.7 million persons, including 6.2 million internally displaced as the humanitarian crisis continues resulting in sluggish economic activity and lack of basic social services such as health, education, water supply and sanitation,” the ministry said in a statement.

“The effects of the new coronavirus infection have placed an additional burden on vulnerable healthcare systems in Syria especially in the northeastern region where nearly 2 million people, including more than 500,000 internally displaced persons, are in need of humanitarian assistance, as only few hospitals are fully functioning, while the situation remains uncertain.”

The aid will be used to provide medical equipment and materials necessary for specialized and emergency life-saving medical services and artificial dialysis services.
