LONDON: This summer’s Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics “certainly will happen,” International Olympic Committee executive John Coates said Tuesday.

The Tokyo Games will commence on July 23 “as scheduled” and “will be the safest Games possible,” Coates, who heads the Coordination Commission for the Tokyo Olympics, said in a video message posted on the IOC’s official website.

“All of the (coronavirus) countermeasures have been put in place … to ensure that the public, the athletes and all of the other participants are safe.”

Coates stressed that holding the Tokyo Games as scheduled means “a victory of humankind over the pandemic.”

In the same video message, IOC Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi said, “The next 100 days will be about refining all the details and testing, training the teams. This is what we’re going to do.”
