Five earthquakes struck Japan on May 16, all of which had seismic intensities under 5 and appeared to have not incurred any major damage, with no tsunami warnings issued.
An earthquake hit off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture on Sunday, with a maximum seismic intensity of 4.6 and an epicenter at a depth of 50 km, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Another earthquake with a magnitude of 3 also struck Miyagi prefecture.
Earlier in the day, another mild earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 struck Northeastern Chiba Prefecture with an epicenter at a depth of 20 km.
An earthquake hit off the Coast of Kushiro (Hokkaido) on Sunday, with a maximum seismic intensity of 3 and an epicenter at a depth of 60 km, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
In Southern Nagano Prefecture, a magnitude 3.3 earthquake with an epicenter at the depth of 10 km struck.
In Southern Ibaraki Prefecture, a magnitude 3.4. earthquake with an inland seismic activity at level of 2 struck. The earthquake’s epicenter was at a depth of 40 km.
Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world’s most seismically active areas. Japan accounts for about 20% of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.
