PARIS: Pope Francis called for the abolition of nuclear weapons in a video message released online Monday ahead of his visit to Japan.

"Together with all of you, I pray that the destructive power of nuclear weapons is never used again in human history. It is immoral to use nuclear weapons," the three-minute message said.

The pope is set to visit Japan for four days from Saturday.

He expressed hope that his visit will encourage people to proceed along the path to "firm and lasting" peace.

"I assure you of my solidarity prayer for all and each one of you," he also said.

During his trip, he will visit Nagasaki and Hiroshima, devastated by the U.S. atomic bombings in August 1945 in the closing days of World War II.

He will mourn the victim of the atomic bombs and send out a message for peace.

He will also visit Tokyo.
